Background

Project Value: R500m

RCE Consultants (Pty) Ltd was appointed by Transnet Capital Projects to assist with the condition assessment of all the civil infrastructure at the City Deep Container Terminal. In addition, RCE also had to perform preliminary design work associated with the potential expansion of the Terminal, to cater for the expected increase in container traffic to South Africa.

Key Features

The civil infrastructure included in the condition assessment was the concrete paving, railway trackwork, effluent system, stormwater drainage as well as the buildings and workshops of the current City Deep Container Terminal. Concept development and track layout studies were aimed at a suitable layout and preliminary design of a new container terminal allowing for processing a million Twenty Foot Equivalent Units (TEU’s) per annum.

Services Provided

The scope of work included the condition assessment of the current infrastructure, basic engineering design of the new 1 000 000 TEU facility including design criteria, specifications and BOQ.

The project was designed for Reach Stacker Operation (RSO) initially and for Rubber Tired Gantry (RTG) operation ultimately.

The scope includes the following elements: Development of reach stacker layout drawings | Development and Refinement of the RTG layout drawing | Design of the entrance in association with other role players | Provision of space for future maintenance facilities | Development of an effluent solution for the reach stacker phase | Detailed design of the paving layout including drainage and sleeves.

Outcome

The work performed included the condition assessment of the current infrastructure as well as the basic engineering design of the new 1 million TEU facility. The design included design criteria, specifications and Bills of Quantities. The design was based on an initial Reach Stacker Operation, ultimately migrating to a Rubber Tired Gantry (RTG) operation.
