Background


Project Value: R26m

The upgrade of the platforms at Durban and Pietermaritzburg Stations forms part of PRASA’s overall national platform rectification programme and is situated in one of PRASA’s priority corridors. The Turnkey (Design and Construct) tender required the planning, conceptual design, design development, detail design, construction and commissioning of the works.

Construction included the replacements of 900m ballasted track with slabtrack, construction of sub-surface and surface drainage and rectification of affected platform walls.

 

Key Features


In regard to the trackwork at the stations, the objectives were as follows: The provision of a stable track, the level and alignment of which would be fixed so as to maintain vertical and horisontal clearances to the platforms | The provision of a structure which would eliminate track maintenance | A clean and attractive structure which would not trap litter.

 

Services Provided


The services provided by RCE included the following: Preparation of a complete preliminary investigation report detailing the extent of the problem and recommending a specific solution | Following the acceptance and approval of the report by PRASA the preparation of complete detail designs | Monitoring the construction to ensure that the work is constructed in accordance with the design intent | Preparation of as-built drawings.
