RCE Consultants (Pty) Ltd was appointed by the HMG JV (Hatch, Mott MacDonald and Goba Joint Venture) to assist Transnet with the development of their Pier 1 Rail Terminal as well as the re-modelling of the Kings Rest Marshalling Yard at the Port of Durban.

 

Key Features


The project entailed the re-modelling of the Kings Rest Arrivals and Departure Yards to accommodate container trains. This included providing new signalling cabins and guard houses as well as the demolition of an old H-bridge. The construction of a new Rail Terminal was also required for the transfer of containers from/to rail wagons to/from the Durban Container Terminal (DCT).

 

Services Provided


The scope of engineering service included: Determination of the client user requirements for Kings Rest Marshalling Yard and Pier 1 Rail Terminal | Layout design of the Kings Rest Marshalling Yard for the receipt and dispatch of container train sets | Layout design of the Pier 1 Rail Terminal, allowing for access roads, rail infrastructure, crane rail beams and stormwater drainage | Detail design of access roads, fencing, railway trackwork, rail mounted gantry crane rail beam, mechanically stabilised earth wall, stormwater drainage, cable pipe and chamber system for electrical reticulation and security cameras, security control rooms and various stormwater and sewerage manholes.

 

Outcome


RCE provided the Client with workable designs for a re-modelled Kings Rest Marshalling Yard as well as a new Pier 1 Rail Terminal to facilitate the handling of rail based container traffic.
